Review: At Love's Bidding by Regina Jennings

At Love's Bidding
Author - Regina Jennings
Rating - 4 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

After helping her grandfather at their Boston auction house, Miranda Wimplegate discovers she's accidentally sold a powerful family's prized portrait to an anonymous bidder. Desperate to appease the furious family, her grandfather tracks it to the Missouri Ozarks and makes an outlandish offer to buy the local auction house if they promise not to sell anything until he arrives.

Upon their arrival, however, they discover their new business doesn't deal in fine antiques, but in livestock. And its manager, ruggedly handsome Wyatt Ballentine, is frustrated to discover his fussy new bosses don't know a thing about the business he's single-handedly kept afloat. Faced with more cattle than they can count--but no mysterious painting--Miranda and Wyatt form an unlikely but charged partnership to try and salvage a bad situation getting worse.

What I Loved...

A mixture of romance, intrigue, and humor, At Love's Bidding has all the ingredients for what I love in a novel.

I've grown accustomed to characters going out west and falling in love and settling. Without giving away spoilers, I was excited how Jennings, turned the ending up a notch.

What I Liked...

Character, Wyatt Ballentie, is my kind of hero! More times than I can count I wanted to smack some sense into character, Miranda. Logically I couldn't blame the character for her choices, but when a character makes you want to toss caution to the wind...I know that he is my kind of hero!

The secondary characters were delightfully written and provided most of te humor.

Other...

The cover is absolutely adorable! I love it.

While the novel did have the ingredients I found I liked the book but not loved it. It is still worth a read. I enjoy Regina Jennings books and this one is no different. The book is part of a series, but is a standalone book and you need not read the others in order to read this one. But for those who have the other books in the series, the previous characters make appearances...I personally love that.

Review: Until the Dawn by Elizabeth Camden

Until The Dawn
Author - Elizabeth Camden
Rating - 3.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Probably Not

Back Cover...

A volunteer for the newly established Weather Bureau, Sophie van Riijn needs access to the highest spot in her village to report the most accurate readings. Fascinated by Dierenpark, an abandoned mansion high atop a windswept cliff in the Hudson River Valley, Sophie knows no better option despite a lack of permission from the absent owners.

The first Vandermark to return to the area in sixty years, Quentin intends to put an end to the shadowy rumors about the property that has brought nothing but trouble upon his family. Ready to tear down the mansion, he is furious to discover a local woman has been trespassing on his land.

Instantly at odds, Quentin and Sophie find common ground when she is the only one who can reach his troubled son. There's a light within Sophie that Quentin has never known, and a small spark of the hope that left him years ago begins to grow. But when the secrets of Dierenpark and the Vandermark family history are no longer content to stay in the past, will tragedy triumph or can their tenuous hope prevail?

What I Loved...

I am always amazed how author Elizabeth Camden manages to give her heroines truly unique jobs and interests. Hobbies and positions that I would have never thought of. Heroine Sophie is no different as a volunteer weather analyst.

One of my favorite reasons for always reading Elizabeth Camden's books is her ability to add a spiritual connection to the plot without it being preachy or pushy. It flows so well. Until The Dawn was no exception.

What I Liked...

True to her previous novels, Camden offers a wide variety of characters that jump off the pages. Better yet, they bring you into the story and you feel like you know these people, so much so that it is hard to believe that have never once existed in reality.

Other...

I enjoyed both main characters Sophie and Quentin...separately. Together, they just didn't mesh well for me. Often times I found that story had no main purpose and dragged on. I think that is because I wasn't fond of Sophie and Quentin's love story. It lacked that something special that makes me root for characters even though in the end I know they end up together. I still want to root for them. I still want to feel the torment of their struggle and the giddiness of a knowing glance shared between a man and heroine. I just didn't get that with Until The Dawn.  The build up took way too long and the ending was rushed.

I love the cover as I usually do with Elizabeth Camden books.

I will continue to read her work as I have enjoyed all her others and hope this to be an isolated case. To be certain, I reread two of her previous books and fell right back in line with loving her work.

Review: Whispers In The Reading Room by Shelley Gray

Whispers In The Reading Room
Author - Shelley Gray
Rating - 4.0 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

Just months after the closure of the Chicago World’s Fair, librarian Lydia Bancroft finds herself fascinated by a mysterious dark-haired and dark-eyed patron. He has never given her his name; he actually never speaks to a single person. All she knows about him is that he loves books as much as she does.

Only when he rescues her in the lobby of the Hartman Hotel does she discover that his name is Sebastian Marks. She also discovers that he lives at the top of the prestigious hotel and that most everyone in Chicago is intrigued by him.

Lydia and Sebastian form a fragile friendship, but when she discovers that Mr. Marks isn’t merely a very wealthy gentleman, but also the proprietor of an infamous saloon and gambling club, she is shocked.

Lydia insists on visiting the club one fateful night and suddenly is a suspect to a murder. She must determine who she can trust, who is innocent, and if Sebastian Marks—the man so many people fear—is actually everything her heart believes him to be.

What I Loved...

Not what I expected! Admittedly, this is my first read by Shelley Gray although I have seen many of her books. From the beginning of the book I was surprised, partly because I judged the book by its cover (Tsk Tsk Tsk) and mostly because I never imagined the story to unfold as it did. Whispers in The Reading Room is far from unpredictable and I love that! I love romance and this book has plenty of it in an unconventional way.

What I Liked...

The characters were written well and not your average "hero" and "heroine". They were very, very flawed, but I couldn't help but get caught up in their story and cheer for them.

Lately I've been reading a lot of books centered or including Chicago's World Fair and that isn't necessarily a good thing. However, this book took a completely different approach having set the place after the fair's end. I enjoyed a sneak peek into life after the fair.

Other...

Shamefully I admitted that I judged the book by the cover, which I do like by the way, but I don't believe the cover or the title actually capture this book. The whispering that take place in the reading room is a very minor part of the book.

One of my pet peeves is Christian Fiction not encompassing the Christian part of Christian Fiction. To mem without a character coming to the feet of Jesus or solving a problem through faith or something along those lines, I don't consider it Christian Fiction. Unfortunately Gray missed the mark on that aspect. So if you are looking for an unpredicatable clean romance, I recommend Whispers In The Reading Room. If you are looking for a more faith inspired book, this isn't the book for you.

Review: Love's Sure Dawn by Naomi Rawlings

Love's Sure Dawn
Author - Naomi Rawlings
Rating - 5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: A Big Fat Yes!!

Back Cover...

No matter how hard she tries to help, Rebekah Cummings always ends up causing more problems than she solves. This time, though, things will be different. She'll find a way to pay her family's debts, even if doing so requires leaving Eagle Harbor. Maybe then they'll start treating her as a capable woman who makes her own choices.

Gilbert Sinclair is going to marry an heiress. With his latest business venture sunk at the bottom of Lake Superior, he needs money to replace the steamship he lost, so he heads to Chicago where his father's business connections should land him a suitable wife. Like most things in his meticulously planned life, everything goes as expected—until he discovers Rebekah Cummings working as the new cook on his ship.

Rebekah well remembers the pain she endured the last time she tried trusting Gilbert, and Gilbert can't afford to pursue the love of a working class woman. But they can't stop the forgotten feelings swirling between them—or ignore the sacrifices they'd both have to make for a future together.
If you love Christian romance, small towns, and historical places that come alive on the page, then you will love Love's Sure Dawn.

What I Loved...

Love's Sure Dawn is one of those rare books where I loved both main characters. Rebekah Cummings is a sassy heroine that goes after what she believes in. She is a strong character that I couldn't help but root for her wholeheartedly.

My love for hero character Gilbert Sinclair astounds me. If you read Love's Evey Whisper (Naomi's previous novel in which Gilbert is also a central character -you can read my review HERE) - you can fully appreciate my astonishment. How Naomi managed to make me fall in love with the same Gilbert in this novel still boggles my mind. Naomi did such a great job not changing the essence of Gilbert keeping him a true and consistent character from one book to the next. She took me on a journey to discover why Gilbert was worth loving despite his many flaws all without changing who he was. That's great writing.

Full of romance, a little action/suspense, comical moments and inspiration, its one of my favorite reads of the year.

What I Liked...

The introduction to new characters (and future lead characters) was seamless and not forced. There were a few "I didn't see that coming" moments which are always a treat.

Other...

The cover is lovely and I pictured Rebekah that way throughout the book which is rare for me. Most of the time I have a whole different picture in my head of what characters look like. Love's Sure Dawn is a stand alone novel, BUT I suggest reading Love's Every Whisper first!  It will enhance your reading experience, especially for Gilbert's story.

So Naomi released three books within a very short amount of time. Yay! Her next book in the series isn't due to be released until winter 2016 (I think)...Booooo!

Naomi you spoiled me with quick release dates. I may never recover having to wait a year! As a writer I completely understand. As a fan, I am crushed.

If you haven't read any of the books in the series, pick them all up, you won't be disappointed.

Review: Love's Every Whisper by Naomi Rawlings

Love's Every Whisper
Author - Naomi Rawlings
Rating - 4 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

Victoria Donnelly is, as always, a failure. With five years of failed courtships behind her and the calendar inching closer to another birthday, Victoria's determined to redeem herself and snag a proposal from a wealthy childhood acquaintance, Gilbert Sinclair. But returning to Eagle Harbor stirs up long forgotten memories. And worse, old affection for her betrothed's enemy.

Elijah Cummings has loved Victoria for fifteen years. But fishermen's sons don't marry shipping barons' daughters. He knows it. She knows it. The entire town knows it. Resolved to keep his distance from Victoria, Elijah focuses on establishing a much needed life-saving station, risking his own life by rescuing sailors stuck aboard shipwrecks.

He knows how to save drowning sailors, but how is he to save a woman from the biggest mistake of her life—without destroying both their hearts in the process?

What I Loved...

I am quite used to reading about hero's that may start off badly and end up capturing my heart. I am also used to reading about hero's that are good and loving and capture my heart. I am not used to hero's that are good and loving and then not so good and still capture my heart. Naomi did a great job crafty perfectly human characters.

Love's Every Whisper has a few sharp turns that took the book in a way I never anticipated. Those moments kept me reading past my bedtime.

What I Liked...

From my recollection, this is the only book I have ever read with a water life-saving rescue squad. I was so pleased to read a book with a new aspect, especially from a historical setting. Pleasantly surprised!

Love's Every Whisper is part of a series but is easily read as a stand-alone book.

Other...

The cover is lovely.

This is my first read by Naomi but it won't be my last.  I found a new author to add to my "Will Read" list. I am looking very forward to the next installment in the Eagle Harbor Series.

Guest Reviewer: Street God by Dimas Salaberrios

Street God
Author - Dimas Salaberrios
Rating - 4.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

His street name was Daylight. But he was a nightmare. On the streets of New York, darkness and violence reigned. Dimas “Daylight” Salaberrios popped his first pill when he was eleven years old, and just days later, he was selling drugs to his schoolmates. By fifteen, he was facing time at the notorious Rikers Island Prison. It was never safe to turn your back, and Dimas saw only one chance to survive: to become a street god. He would be the richest, most powerful ruler in the hood . . . or die trying.

But in one terrifying moment, with a gun pointed at his head, Dimas had to decide: How far would he go? Was he finished taking reckless chances to rule as a god of the streets? Would he dare to entrust his life to the real God—an even riskier path? Because that God would send Dimas back down the darkest streets he’d ever known on a rescue mission after those still in danger.

Street God is the true story of one man’s against-all-odds journey from the streets to the altar and back again. A modern-day The Cross and the Switchblade for a new generation, it reveals that we’re never too far gone for God to change us—and shows how a single spark can illuminate even the darkest existence.

Review

"The book truly is about a street God. What I love about the book was the reality in which in which he lived his life. I am familiar with lifestyle and have lived some of it.  I come from the same place that Daylight came from. Daylight is an amazing guy and connected to him a lot. He has overcome so many trials in his life. He is a perfect example how God allows you to go through the bad choices in life but can bring you out of them. God perfectly had a purpose for him.  I was amazed that while the book was all about drugs, murder, gang life, deception and law breaking, the language was clean. The only thing I would change about this book is the lack of attention his daughter received in the book. I'm not sure why. I would have liked to have seen more of that relationship. Even still, this is the kind of book I love to read.  I am happy that he shared his story. It is very uplifting." MD

Thanks for the guest review MD!

Review: Love In The Details by Becky Wade

Love In The Details
Author - Becky Wade
Rating - 4.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes!!

Back Cover...

When Josh returns to his hometown of Martinsburg, Texas, to help his best friend get married, he didn’t intend to run into church wedding coordinator—and ex-girlfriend—Holly. He can’t help but pine after the girl he never got over.

Holly broke up with Josh years ago in an attempt to ensure his future success. But she loved him then and still loves him now. As she helps him plan his best friend’s wedding, she can’t help but feel horrible for the pain she caused him. And even though she longs to be with Josh, she doesn’t feel worthy of his big-time lifestyle when she is more comfortable in her small town world. Will Josh and Holly be able to keep things as they are when their true feelings threaten to surface at every turn?

What I Loved...

True to Becky Wade fashion, there are lots of  what I like to call "Just Kiss Her Already!" moments. There are also some "Just Admit Your Love!" moments too. I LOVE these kinds of moments. With Love In The Details being a novella, I didn't have to wait long for them or the ending.

What I Liked...

Josh is adorably nerdy and brooding and yet a softy. Becky knows how to write a hero well.

Love In The Details can probably hold me over until Becky's next full-length release, although she should probably get a move on.

Other...

I know this book is part of a collection and I get that is the reason for the cover. BUT that doesn't mean I have to like it. I love Becky's usually cute covers and this fell flat. It's not a bad cover, just lacking Becky's signature look. I probably wouldn't buy this book based off the cover.

All in all, if you are looking for a fun, romantic and short read, this is one to definitely get. I truly enjoyed it.

Review: Love Everlasting by Tracie Peterson

Love Everlasting
Author - Tracie Peterson
Rating - 3.75 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend:

Back Cover...

Growing up in a Seattle bridal finishing school never prepared Abrianna Cunningham to become one of the brides, but now Wade Ackerman, who has always been the reliable boy next door, is indicating he wants to be more than friends. And even the people closest to Abrianna believe Wade is the man she should marry. So why is she having such a hard time choosing between Wade Ackerman and Priam Welby?

Watching Welby's relentless pursuit of Abrianna is making Wade's blood boil. Welby can offer her wealth and security, but what about character and integrity? Surely Abrianna can see past Welby's smooth tongue and fine clothes. Can't she?

Caught between the devil and the boy next door, either choice she makes will change Abrianna's life forever.

What I Loved...

Protaganist Abrianna Cunningham is quite the character. She has always been my favorite in the Seattle Brides Series. She is uniquely different than most heroines I read.

What I Liked...

I have been waiting for Abrianna's story and I was happy to read her character shine once again in the book, even if only for some of the book.

Other...

Love Everlasting has turned into a hard book for me to review. After waiting so long for this book, I found the first half of the book so disappointing. While reading, I kept wondering how sad I would be typing up my not so favorable blog post. BUT thankfully I continued reading and the second half of the book is much better. The character that I came to really like, Abrianna, was written as I have come to remember and enjoyed reading in previous books.

The back cover synopsis isnt really the best description of the book. The plot is better than what is described.

All in all, if the first half of this book was cut out, I would have really enjoyed this book much more, however I am grateful that it did get better.

The cover is nice, but this is how I have always pictured Abrianna.

Review: A Sapphire Season by Lynn Morris

A Sapphire Season
Author - Lynn Morris
Rating - 3 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Not Sure

Back Cover...

Lady Mirabella Tirel, the beautiful daughter of the Marquess of Camarden, takes a practical approach to love since a dashing captain broke her heart at age 17. Now at almost 22 years old, she has decided to endure one last London season to secure a suitable engagement and begin a simple life in the country.

Sir Giles Knyvet is Mirabella's oldest friend and her most dependable ally, and he is also secretly in love with her. Yet he knows the prospect of a relationship is doubtful: Besides being a mere baronet, he aims to settle a large family debt before sharing his feelings with her. But as Mirabella draws close to a suitable match, Giles may need to interfere to buy himself more time.

Thoughts:

I have decided to bypass my customary What I Love, Like and Other for this book because I simply confused. It's funny because I read through the book quickly and the more I read, the more I became unsure if I liked it or not. Two days after I finished reading the book, I kept thinking about the main hero Giles Knyvet. Why, I am sot sure. Here is what I do know.

Throughout most of the book heroine Lady Mirabella, is sorting through his list of prospects to find a husband. Throughout most of the book we see her with other gentleman courting her. I found this rather aggravating. How was I supposed to root for her and Giles to be together, if I hardly read of them together, other than in the beginning and the end of the book. I didn't mind the courting with other men, but maybe if the hero of the book was actually in the book more, I would have found the book more loveable as opposed to likeable. After reading the book and rereading last sentence of the back cover blurb, I don't get that impression at all and is a bit misleading.

On the other hand, the book moved quickly, it wasn't a slow read. I found that I really enjoyed the bits with Giles and would have liked to have read more with him.

Lynn is a good writer, this plot just left me wanting more. I would definitely read more from her, as this was my first Lynn Morris book. Yes, apparently I have been on another planet - I know!!

Free For Kindle - Eyes On Him

Just Updated & FREE

A few years ago while mentoring my niece and bible study class student, we had a funny discussion about boys. She spilled her girl problems and I joked that one day I would write a book about her feelings. It was a joke at first, but the more I spoke about it, the more I felt led to do it. So I "wrote" a book and had it printed. It was just for the girls in my class to read.  I had gotten so much positive feedback that I attempted to polish up the story because I had also gotten lots of negative feedback...editing being the number one negative. After many rounds of editing, I think I finally got it...hopefully! Self-Publishing is hard work!

Here is my first book, Eyes On Him. It is free on Kindle until Monday, September 7. If you have a prior version, I was told you can delete it from Kindle and download the new one. I'm not sure how true that it, however.

Hope you enjoy it.

Waiting on Wednesday - September 2, 2015

Growing up in a Seattle bridal finishing school never prepared Abrianna Cunningham to become one of the brides, but now Wade Ackerman, who has always been the reliable boy next door, is indicating he wants to be more than friends. And even the people closest to Abrianna believe Wade is the man she should marry. So why is she having such a hard time choosing between Wade Ackerman and Priam Welby?

Why I Am Waiting

I have read the first two books in the Brides of Seattle Book Series by Tracie Peterson and from the very first book, Abrianna has been my favorite character. In fact, her storyline is the only reason I finished the first book - Steadfast Heart. The second book in the series, Refining Fire, was better than the first and added my interest in Abrianna's storyline. Abrianna's storyline is finally being told in the third book - Love Everlasting and I am super excited to read it.

Her character is funny, charming, devout, determined, yet naive when it comes to the heart and men.

Here is how I picture Abrianna:

Review: Bathsheba by Angela Hunt

Bathsheba: Reluctant Beauty
Author - Angela Hunt
Rating - 3 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Probably

Back Cover...

After sending his army to besiege another king's capital, King David forces himself on Bathsheba, a loyal soldier's wife. When her resulting pregnancy forces the king to murder her husband and add her to his harem, Bathsheba struggles to protect her son while dealing with the effects of a dark prophecy and deadly curse on the king's household.

Combining historical facts with detailed fiction, Angela Hunt paints a realistic portrait of the beautiful woman who struggled to survive the dire results of divine judgment on a king with a divided heart.

What I Loved...

Throughout the bible, we often see Bathsheba as David's lover, grieving mother and David's wife. Although we know is she also the mother of Solomon, I admit that I have never really explored that relationship while reading. Author Angela Hunt focused a lot of Bathsheba, as the devoted mother of Solomon. It is my favorite element of the book.

What I Liked...

Biblical Fiction can get a little tricky and you have to remember that fiction is intertwined with actual biblical accounts and I had to mentally check myself to not blur the lines. That is good writing!

Other...

The cover is beautiful. I love it!

I have read and loved biblical fiction and its probably a hard genre to write because you have to remember to keep what is factual in tact while adding your own fictional plots and twists. However, I feel like Bathsheba's plot fell short for me. I think Angela is a really good writer and I would read more of her books, but I think the fictional plot she choose just didn't do it for me. Whether Bathsheba willing slept with David and committed adultery or whether she was raped  isn't known. Hunt choose to center her plot around the latter, but how the book unfolded from that point of view left me wanting.

The book is a good book, just not for me.

Review: Promises Kept by Scarlett Dunn

Promises Kept
Author - Scarlett Dunn
Rating - 5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend:

Back Cover...

Victoria Eastman grew up in a Texas saloon—an experience that made her tough, resourceful, and determined to forge a new life. So she places an ad in a gentleman's newspaper... and soon finds herself a suitable arrangement on a farm in Promise, Wyoming. Only problem is that her would-be husband turns up dead the day she arrives.

Rancher Colt McBride is known for his true grit and business smarts. Yet when it comes to his new neighbor, Victoria, he's stumped: Who is she, really? She's lovely to look at, of course, and has proven herself a gentle soul. She's even causing him to question his staunch bachelorhood. But any kind of future may be shattered when a stranger reveals a secret about Victoria's past—one that could destroy them both. Unless, together, they can take a leap of faith—right into each other's arms.

What I Loved...

Victoria is a very likable heroine. I thought she was well written. Most of the characters were extremely well written and I could see them all so clearly as I was reading.  The attraction between Victoria and Colt was great and I enjoyed their love story. Romance is what I look forward to the most in book and I wasn't disappointed.

What I Liked...

You can't have a cowboy in a book and not expect some showdown action and brawls. Promises Kept was full of suspense and action to keep  me interested and interested I was indeed. The plot was good.

Other...

I'm not a fan of the cover. It was a little boring for this book that is full of romance, action and suspense.

While I really did enjoy the book, there were two main reasons for only rating it a 3 out of 5.

First, there was some foul language in the book. I do not like to read foul language in any book especially in a Christian book. I have read many many many books with cowboys, rangers, thugs, and it made sense that the character would use foul language, yet the author creatively worked around it and expressed his bad language without actually using the word. I just can not stomach foul language and the fact that it was used quite a few times was disappointing.

Secondly, I found the "Christian" in this Christian Fiction lacking. I honestly checked twice to assure myself that I was reading a Christian Fiction book.

I am unsure whether I would venture to read another Scarlett Dunn book. The plot and characters were nicely written but that wasn't enough for me in this case.

Review: Not By Sight by Kate Breslin

Not By Sight
Author - Kate Breslin
Rating - 4 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: To some more than others

Back Cover...

With Britain caught up in WWI, Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrooke, has declared himself a conscientious objector. Instead, he secretly works for the Crown by tracking down German spies on British soil, his wild reputation and society status serving as a foolproof cover. Blinded by patriotism and concern for her brother on the front lines, wealthy suffragette Grace Mabry will do whatever it takes to assist her country's cause. When she sneaks into a posh London masquerade ball to hand out white feathers of cowardice, she never imagines the chain of events she'll set off when she hands a feather to Jack. And neither of them could anticipate the extent of the danger and betrayal that follows them--or the faith they'll need to maintain hope.

What I Loved...

I know a few readers that love WWII Era books and this is one that I would definitely recommend. It was intriguing to read about it from the point of view of a country other than the USA. Jack Benningham has a touch of Mr. Rochester in him and I loved it! Grace is no Jane Eyre but I wouldn't have had it any other way. The two make for great leading characters.

I love history as well and was ecstatic that Breslin incorprated some into the book and in her notes.

What I Liked...

Not By Sight had a bit of everything: suspense, romance, a little fun, espionage and a but of thrills. Made the book move along well.

Other...

I like the cover of the book and I do understand why it was used, however I find that is misrepresents the book grossly. I was left wanting a more and a bit disappointed once I finished the book and having looked at the cover once more. In fact, I finished the book a little over a week ago and when I came back to write a review and looked at the cover, I had no idea what the book was about. When I began to read the back cover, it all came back to me in a flood.

I would definitely recommend for any historical fiction readers who like a little romance mixed in with lots more stuff.

Silas can see Anthony loves Kate, so he enlists her help in reaching out to the boy and attempting to prove his paternity to the court. When a common interest in Anthony leads to an interest in each other and Silas and Kate begin to think they can overcome their rocky start, neither is prepared for the secrets and past hurts that have yet to come to light. Can Silas, Kate, and Anthony's wounded souls bind them together or will all that stands between them leave them lonely forever?

What I Loved...

I can't quite remember the last time I read a book where I wanted to just smack several characters including both Silas and Kate, the main characters! I loved that Melissa was able to bring about such emotion from me. I wasn't annoyed with the plot or characters but instead engrossed and just wanted to head out to the homestead and play matchmaker myself. I loved that the characters are so flawed and I loved them each anyway. Once or twice I wondered if I could ever survive in a homestead. While my brain told me no, this book made my heart really want to say yes!

What I Liked...

Melissa Jagears writing caught me a bit by surprise when she took the bits and pieces of the book that are usually meantt to add charm and took them to a whole other level when they turned out to be very intricate details to the characters, their motives, their circumstances and a major part of the plot. I can't with spoilers. If you happen to read this book, and I suggest that you do, please let me know if you happened to pick up on what I am referring to.

Other...

The cover is nice. I didn't picture Silas that way, however.

I had a hard time warming up to little Anthony. I am the parent of an 8 year old boy and by all means should have probably found it easier to like him but I just had a hard time of it. I tried. I really did. It took most of the book before I finally wanted to wrap him up in my arms as much as Kate had and wanted to throughout the book.

This is my first read from author Melissa Jagears and I quite enjoyed it and would read her work again.

Review: Refining Fire by Tracie Peterson

Refining Fire
Author - Tracie Peterson
Rating - 3.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Not Sure

Back Cover...

Militine Scott, twenty-two, is in training at the Madison School for Brides in Seattle, Washington. Though she has no intention of pursuing marriage–believing no man will have her–she has found the school provides the perfect opportunity to hide her unsavory past.

Thane Patton, though fun loving and fiercely loyal to his friends, hides a dark secret, as well. He finds himself drawn to Militine, sensing a haunting pain similar to his own.Sure Will they finally allow God to make something new and beautiful from the debris of the past?

What I Loved...

Thane is sweet and a firefighter. That is about all I need, but he is also just a plain old good guy. He's not the charming flirt or the brooding mysterious guy, but just hard working and loving. He's a refreshing character.

I loved the ending with Millitine's friend Arianna but no spoilers.

What I Liked...

I always enjoy reading true history in fiction books and liked reading about the firefighters struggles during fires and how different life was 150 years ago.

Other...

Although I enjoyed this book more than book 1 of the Brides of Seattle Series, I found the same issue with the first. I found Millitine, the heroine, wanting and her story seemed to be the background story to Arianna's story which I love.

I am looking forward to Arianna's story.

The cover is beautiful.

By the way, here is how I pictured Thane.

In Good Company by Jen Turano

In Good Company
Author - Jen Turano
Rating - 5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Absolutely!

Back Cover...

After growing up as an orphan, Millie Longfellow is determined to become the best nanny the East Coast has ever seen. Unfortunately, her playfulness and enthusiasm aren't always well-received and she finds herself dismissed from yet another position.

Everett Mulberry has quite unexpectedly become guardian to three children that scare off every nanny he hires. About to depart for Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer, he's desperate for competent childcare.

At wit's end with both Millie and Everett, the employment agency gives them one last chance--with each other. As Millie falls in love with her mischievous charges, Everett focuses on achieving the coveted societal status of the upper echelons. But as he investigates the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the children's parents, will it take the loss of those he loves to learn whose company he truly wants for the rest of his life?

What I Loved...

Jen Turano is one of my go-to authors when I need a book to fall in love with. Her books are consistently AWESOME! I simply love In Good Company. I can't even pinpoint just a few things that I love because I loved the whole book.

Main character Millie is funny and smart and such a joy to read. Her strong desire to improve her vocabulary, yet seemingly always using the incorrect word is so hilarious and makes her character so endearing.

In Good Company is a light-hearted funny read full of romance and a Christian message to tie it altogether.

All of the characters are so well written as is the story. Kudos Jen Turano!

I enjoyed reading In Good Company so much that I went back and began to reread The Ladies of Distinction Series. I enjoyed them just as much as I did since the first time I read her books.

What I Liked...

See what I loved.

Other...

The cover is really cute (although not my favorite). In Good Company is a part of the series A Class Of Their Own, but is a standalone book. I do recommend that you read After A Fashion before reading In Good Company. You can read my review for After A Fashion Here.

Beyond The Ashes by Karen Barnett

Beyond The Ashes
Author - Karen Barnett
Rating - 2.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Not Really

Back Cover...

Where better to rebuild and face one’s fears than in 1906 San Francisco, a city rising from the ashes? Ruby Marshall, a young widow, is certain she’ll discover new purpose assisting her brother Robert with his cancer research, but she doesn’t anticipate finding new love. Dr. Gerald Larkspur dreams of filling his empty home with family, but he’d always hoped it would be a wife and children. In the aftermath of the great earthquake, the rooms are overflowing with extended family and friends left homeless by the disaster. When Robert’s widowed sister arrives, the close quarters seem close indeed. Ruby and Gerald’s fledgling romance is put at risk when Gerald develops symptoms of the very disease they’re striving to cure. Together they must ask—is it worth a second chance at love when time might be short?

What I Loved...

Most of the books I read have a strapping, manly hero and that isn't a complaint! I love me a brooding, flirty, fierce and strong hero. But every now and then and if written the right away, a "Nerdy" hero can make me love a book. Such is the case with Dr. Gerald Larkspur. Let me clarify a bit. He isn't the clumsy, bumbling, fool kind of a nerd. Nope, he is a smart, not quite so flirty, a little of unsure of himself but not necessarily shy, but loving hero and my favorite character from Beyond The Ashes. A Dr. McDreamy if you will.

What I Liked...

The family dynamic of Beyond The Ashes is quite sweet and funny. A house full of women, is always a riot and or dramatic. Either way, it makes for good reading.
Liked

Other...

Ruby Marshall if the heroine of this book. I have found that no matter how much I can like every other aspect of a book, if I am not fond of the heroine, I end up not being too fond of the book as a whole. Such is the case with Beyond The Ashes. Couple that with the fact that I didn't read the first book in the series, although this is a stand alone book, I didn't come into the series loving the characters. I would like to hpe that I having read Out Of The Ruins, that perhaps I would have liked this book better. As it stands, I am not a fan of Beyond The Ashes.

A Worthy Pursuit by Karen Witemeyer

A Worthy Pursuit
Author -Karen Witemeyer
Rating - 5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yep!

Also Available at Christianbook.com

Back Cover...

Stone Hammond is the best tracker in Texas. He never comes home empty-handed. So when a wealthy railroad investor hires him to find his abducted granddaughter, Stone eagerly accepts.

Charlotte Atherton, former headmistress of Sullivan’s Academy for Exceptional Youths, will do anything to keep her charges safe, especially the little girl entrusted to her care after her mother’s death. Charlotte promised Lily’s mother she’d keep the girl away from her unscrupulous grandfather, and nothing will stop Charlotte from fulfilling that pledge. Not even the handsome bounty hunter with surprisingly honest eyes who comes looking for them.

When the teacher he’s after produces documentation that shows she’s the little girl’s legal guardian, Stone must reevaluate everything he’s been led to believe. Is Miss Atherton villain or victim? She acts more like a loving mother than an abductress, and the children in her care clearly adore her. Should Stone break his perfect record?

Then a new danger threatens, and Charlotte is forced to trust the man sent to destroy her. Stone becomes determined to protect what he once sought to tear apart. Besides, he’s ready to start a new pursuit: winning Charlotte’s heart.

What I Loved...

Stone. Stone. Stone. From the moment I read that the male centered character was named Stone, I knew I would love this book and Karen Witemeyer didn't disappoint. He is a wonderfully and well written character. Charm, wit, smarts and all man. Love it!

Romance, a bit of action and comedy are what I have come to expect and love from Witemeyer and I am always satisfied. If you have never read any of her books, you better hurry and start. She is consistently good and this book is right up there with all of her others, which means you have a lot of catching up to do.

What I Liked...

The gifted children in the book (the students of main character Charlotte) were a great addition to the plot. Extraordiarily talented children are rare in Christian Fiction books from this era. Nice and lovely surprise. I can't help but wonder if Karen plays the piano herself. She describes the emotions of a piano player getting lost in the music so vividly as one who has experienced it herself.

Other...

The cover is cute, as is all of her covers, except I didn't picture Charlotte that way at all and I imagined Stone a larger man than the one covered. However, this is a must read for all Christian Fiction lovers or newcomers.

Review: A Love Like Ours by Becky Wade

A Love Like Ours
Author - Becky Wade
Rating - 4.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yep!

Back Cover...

Former Marine Jake Porter has far deeper scars than the one that marks his face. He struggles with symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.

When Lyndie James, Jake’s childhood best friend, lands back in Holley, Texas, Jake cautiously hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds. Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like she was as a child. Jake pairs her with Silver Leaf, a horse full of promise but lacking in results, hoping she can solve the mystery of the stallion’s reluctance to run.

Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake’s will, Lyndie’s sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he’s built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he’d thought he’d lost returns, but fears and regrets still plague him. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?

What I Loved...

I was super excited to read A Love Like Ours because I am a big fan of the Porter Brothers and I couldn't wait to read Jake's story.

While I am partial to the flirty hero who turns into a hopeless romantic for one woman, I loved Jake Porter's brooding character. I have seen the brooding character done more times than I can count, but Jake's character was written very well. He had a genuine purpose for being a brooding hero as opposed to many other characters who are deep and distant just for the sake of it.

Ty and Celia made an appearance! Yay...Meant To Be Mine is still my fave Becky Wade, but A Love Like Ours is second.

What I Liked...

Lyndie wasn't what I expected. I expected her to be a more upbeat and playful character but I found that wasn't the case, but I liked her nevertheless. The horse ranch setting was cute and I could totally picture them watching and riding horses. Whispering Creek ranch became more real to me in A Love Like Ours than it had been in Undeniable Yours.

Other...

I follow Becky Wade's blog and facebook page so to see all of the covers for the book was fun. The one she chose was my favorite.

I didn't give this book five stars because I didn't particularly care for Lyndie's character believing that her sister with CP (I think) had a healing power. Not that it isn't possible, Becky just didn't do a good enough job of convincing me that her character had that effect on anyone. I felt that part of the story was left wanting.

I am hoping that Becky is adding one more boo to this collection with Porter Sister Dru's story! Pretty Please!

Review: The Creole Princess by Beth White

The Creole Princess
Author - Beth White
Rating - 4.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes
On Sale Today at Christianbook.com for $9.99

Back Cover...

All along the eastern seaboard, the American struggle for independence rages. In the British-held southern port of Mobile, Alabama, the conflict brewing is quieter--though no less deadly. The lovely Frenchwoman Lyse Lanier is best friends with the daughter of the British commander. Rafael Gonzalez is a charming young Spanish merchant with a secret mission and a shipment of gold to support General Washington. As their paths cross and their destinies become increasingly tangled, Lyse and Rafael must decide where their true loyalties lie--and somehow keep Lyse's family from being executed as traitors to the British Crown.

What I Loved...

My favorite kind of hero in a book is a flirty, cool kind of guy. I always seem to love those books the best. Rafi is that kind of hero and I just loved his character! Plus he is Spanish! He is my first Spanish male hero and I was so excited about it. I am so happy to say that his character didn't disppoint.

As I have mentioned many times before, I love history so a book with lots of swoony bits that incorporates real history is always a great read for me. Loved all of the history. Learned lots of new things.

What I Liked...

Lyse, the heroine, was a likable character and I could picture her clearly barefoot and in all of her splendor as well. She is a well written character that grows as the story progresses. I enjoyed reading her character.

Other...

The cover is stunning, although I didn't quite picture Lyse that way.  The book covers the era of history when The colonies are fighting for freedom from England and includes points of view from the Spanish in the Florida area, the French in the New Orleans area, the British loyalists and American Colonists as well as slaves.

The book packs a punch of both love and history and I truly enjoyed it. I would definitely read Beth White again.

Review: After A Fashion by Jen Turano

After A Fashion
Author - Jen Turano

Would I Recommend: YES!!!

She'll never truly fit into Oliver's world, but just as she's ready to call off the fake relationship, fancy dinners, and elegant balls, a threat from her past forces both Oliver and Harriet to discover that love can come in the most surprising packages.

What I Loved...

After A Fashion is the reason I will read 10 good books in search of one great book. After A Fashion is one great book. I am a fan of Jen Turano and if you are too, After A Fashion won't disappoint.

Harriet is my kind of heroine. She knows what she wants and takes us along with her on a romantic, hilarious and faith filled journey to get it.

What I Liked...

Oliver isn't my favorite Turano hero, but I liked him alot. He is a mix of confidence, trouble, romance and no nonsense.

Other...

LOVE LOVE LOVE the cover. In fact, it is my favorite Turano cover.

While I most certainly loved this book, I did want to mention that I found a few bits of the plot obvious and as soon as I read it, I knew what was going to happen later on. I like surprise and knowing what to expect can make a book drag on and boring to read. However there was enough really other good stuff going on with characters and the plot to make me think of it as a minor annoyance rather than a huge nuisance.

I am most anxiously anticipating the next book in the series.

Review: Betting On Hope by Debra Clopton

Betting on Hope (A Four of Hearts Ranch Romance)
Author - Debra Clopton
Rating - 4 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Probably

Back Cover...

In Wishing Springs, Maggie finds what she has always been looking for: a community and a home. But when her past catches up to her, it threatens everything, even the tender hope that this town holds all of her heart's desires.

What I Loved...

There are tons of cowboy books and I mean tons on the market and as a reviewer I get really excited when I read one that has everything I love (Christian perspective and values, a swoon worthy hero, and some laughs) AND a unique plot. I am very happy to say Betting On Hope is all of that.

What I Liked...

I really like Maggie, the heroine....

WARNING SPOILER...
I really liked that she was not a goody two shoes and has a past with a very messed up family.
END OF SPOILER

Other...

I like the cover although I pictured Tru much more handsome than the cute guy pictured. Although Betting On Hope has all of the ingredients needed for me to absolutely love a book, I found the book missing that special something that I can't quite put my finger. I didn't have that warm fuzzy feeling when I finished reading the book.

I wasn't too fond of the ending. I felt it lacked and can only suspect that we are going to see more of Maggie and Tru is the second book of the series, but I would have still liked a better wrap up to their story.

Review: My Keepsake Bible by Sally Ann Wright

My Keepsake Bible
Author - Sally Ann Wright
Rating - 4.5 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

My Keepsake Bible" combines baby records, family history, and Bible stories. The padded hardcover book is the perfect gift for a new baby and the ideal way to begin to teach the little one God's story. Children will learn early that their family's story is a part of God's story.Full-color, adorable art complements these stories, prayers, and places to record baby and family info. It's a memory book and a Bible story book in one.

What I Loved...

Although the book is only 144 pages, it packs lots of biblical accounts within the 144 pages. It also contains scripture infused prayers between the accounts. A great teaching tool for children to begin to learn to pray.

The beginning pages of the bible contain space to add lots of information like a family tree, birth statistics and milestones.

What I Liked...

The font of the book is adorable and is reminiscent of font used on scrolls with a modern twist. No fancy letters, but instead eye pleasing while easy to read.

The front is cover of the book is a soft plush cover with a durable gloss cover that is sure to survive some toddler use.

Other...

The back cover is not soft but hard cover which I am not too fond of. I would have preferred soft cover all around or hard cover all around. It just feels weird.

The inside pages are a heavier paper. However, I would not recommend this book for toddlers to read alone. They can probably easy rip the pages. This definitely is meant for a early school aged child (1st grade).

When I first saw the artwork I was not too fond of it, but it did grow on me. I can easily picture my children trying to replicate the drawings. They appear so simple with easy lines yet so full of life. Having said that I am not sure that children would actually like the images. With such high tech graphic cartoons these days, simplistic yet beautiful may not resonate with today's children.

I did ask my seven year old and he said they were beautiful drawings. However, he doesn't use that word too often and now I am only left wondering whether he was saying what he thought I wanted to hear. God bless him...lol.

Review: Paper Hearts by Courtney Walsh

Paper Hearts
Author - Courtney Walsh
Rating - 4 out of 5 Stars
Would I Recommend: Yes

Back Cover...

Abigail Pressman would never have guessed that love notes penned on paper hearts by an anonymous couple could restore her belief in love. As a business owner in a quaint town at the base of the Rockies, she's poured everything into dreams of expansion . . . and resisting the matchmaking efforts of the Valentine Volunteers, who gather in her store to continue Loves Park's tradition of stamping mail with the city's romantic postmark. When Abigail is unwillingly drafted into the Volunteers, she encounters the paper hearts, a distraction that couldn't come at a worse time. A hard-to-read doctor has become Abigail's new landlord, and he's threatening to end her lease to expand his practice. As she fights a growing attraction to this handsome man crushing her dreams, Abigail is inspired to string the hearts in her store, sparking a citywide infatuation with the artsy trend. But when a new batch of hearts reaches the Volunteers, it appears something tragic has happened to the couple. Will uncovering their story confirm Abigail's doubts about love, or could it rescue her dreams . . . and her heart?

What I Loved...

The paper hearts in the story is very unique and I really liked it. Its refreshing to read some unique when you read lots of books in the same genre. Kudos to Courtney. The Valentine Volunteers was cute too!

What I Liked...

I liked the darker side of the main hero Jacob. Often times the heros are goody goody and not realistic. Not that that is bad, its just good to read a different side to an already well written characters.

I liked the heroine Abigail too. She seemed to normal and real to me. Like someone I could know. Her little quirks were genuine and not forced. She wasn't an over the top kind of character that can sometimes take over the story. That kind of makes her sound boring, but she wasn't. She was real. That is exactly how she should have been written for this book.

Other...

So the cover caught my attention immediately. I love the paper hearts and the store fronts, BUT the characters on the cover (even from behind) just don't match my characters at all. In fact, I think in my head the characters don't even look like what she describes...lol. My imagination truly did run away...

The older ladies in the story are a hoot, especially Ursula. I think a prequel of her story would be really fun!

Paper Hearts started out really slow but does pick up so hang in there if you feel like its taking a while to get going. I think the book kind of left some things unresolved and hope that there is are some future books to clear up the very minor things. They really are minor but I just can't help feel incomplete.

Here is how I imagined Abigail...I think its how she describes the shape of her face. Warning: She has big blues not browns and I think she may be naturally blonde...\
